I truly do love being a homemaker. I love that part of my job title is decorating. While I don’t claim to have many skills when it comes to decorating and designing a space, I still enjoy it and feel like I have a little bit of a knack for it. I’m not sure how I would best describe my decor and taste but the rooms in my house are very different from one another.
One room that has gone neglected since we moved-in has been our bedroom. I think that’s because no one sees it and we don’t spend tons of time in there (awake anyway). It has been on my “to-do” list for a while but other rooms/decor has been more of a priority. The last few months of nesting and preparation I found myself longing for an “upgrade” (we desperately wanted to get rid of some of the “college furniture/decor” that was still in there). I saved my birthday money and some gift cards we received in hopes of putting them toward a bit of a bedroom makeover. With no need to decorate a nursery this time around, I thought our bedroom should get the attention it needed and I am so happy with the result.
I think the inspiration probably came from Pinterest but I knew I wanted white in our room. White is so clean, easy to add accents to, and bright. I also knew I wanted grey. Grey is so calming and easy to mix with white; it just seemed meant to be. With some ideas from Pinterest and an idea in my head, we decided to give it a go.
We had gone back and forth over whether it was worth the time/energy/cost to paint a wall in our room. Since we aren’t sure how long we will live in our lovely town home, part of me screamed that it was impractical (especially if we have to paint it back) but I knew it was “necessary” for the completion of the room. Just one accent wall really pulled the entire room together.
So without further ado, here is our pretty little room. I love it and find myself wanting to be in there more often. It is so peaceful and I finally feel like our bedroom matches our age and stage of life.
So here are a few details about this little makeover. First, several of the items in this room were bargains, hand-me-downs, dumpster dives (truly!), and DIY projects. There are some new items but mostly, we went with what we had and re-purposed a few things. Here’s a close up of the pictures with some details attached.
- First, our beautiful bed is a hand-me-down/dumpster dive. Friends of Derrik’s parents found it years ago when Derrik was still in college.
- Our duvet cover is new and from Ikea (ps…buy the King Size duvet and cover for a queen sized bed!).
- The grey blanket was a gift this Christmas.
- The night stands are new and from TJ Maxx.
- The chevron pillows are DIY (I know!! I sewed those suckers!).
- The big, gorgeous mirror was a dumpster dive treasure (we just had to replace the middle mirror).
- Our dresser is a beautiful hand-me-down from Derrik’s parents (A LOT of our furniture is from them and I am so grateful!).
- These lovely oversized frames are a DIY made from this tutorial.
- The bookshelf was a garage sale find ($15) that we painted white. (The tall dresser was also a garage sale find for $10 I think).
- The beautiful lavender flower pictures between the windows are hand-me-downs.
- The chalkboard was a DIY following this idea.
- The lanterns (on top of the bookshelf and dresser) are dumpster dives.
- The tall lamp and the table lamp are dumpster dives (they had to be fixed but are now in working order).
- The curtains are from Wal-Mart (gasp!). We wanted dark out ones without paying a crazy amount of money and these were the perfect find.
So that’s our little room. I love it and hope to embellish it a little more. You may have noticed that there is a lot of space next to our dresser on the left side of the bed – that is where the rocking chair will go in the next few weeks…
